More from the wide world of sports: I came across an interesting article by sports writer Will Leitch. In the piece he addresses the issue of athletes thanking God for their efforts, in particular Los Angeles Angel Josh Hamilton. I especially appreciated this paragraph from Mr. Leitch:

“Christianity isn’t some peripheral notion of Hamilton’s life; it is his life. When you live a Christian life, everything you do, from showing up to church on Sunday, to going to the grocery store, to pumping gas, to hitting a home run, to striking out, is done for the glory of Christ. Hamilton isn’t thanking Jesus for helping him hit a homer; he is thanking Jesus for everything. From the homers to the strikeouts to the millions of dollars to all the boos.”

God’s faithfulness, goodness, mercy, love and care have been amazing to this point in your life, which you can see if you’ll stop and reflect. Thank Him. But His best for you is still to come. Trust.

I’ve been thinking a lot about my brother today. Also about my brothers in law, who I declare after 20 years, are full on brothers and about my brothers that God’s put in my life. I can’t tell you how much I appreciate each one of you. Every moment of life is intended to be done together and I am so glad I get to do it with you. Thank you.

I think we found the perfect way to spend Black Friday. (By the way what an appropriate name, you know the day after we gather with friends and family, thanking God for all He’s blessed us with, let’s go out and fight with others to make sure I get mine.) We spent part of the day in the Pisgah National Forest witnessing some of God’s amazing handiwork. The waterfalls were so beautiful and were a reminder of how the Lord wants to pour Himself out for us. Let it rain Father.

Wow, we’ve never traveled on Thanksgiving before. Evidently millions and millions of folks do, we saw most of them on Interstate 40 yesterday. Getting to spend the holiday with loved ones is worth every hour in traffic though. I hope you are surrounded by those that love you well today and that every good and perfect gift is acknowledged as coming from the Lord. I wish you peace in your gatherings and that those you are with will see Jesus through you.

Fourteen years ago one of my all time favorite sons was born. The circumstances leading up to that day caused us to cling to God like never before and every day since Max, you’ve brought us joy, caused our trust in The Lord to remain strong and been such an incredible blessing to everyone that knows you. Thank you for being who you are, thank you for your soft heart and thank you for the love you share so freely.

Today is the one year anniversary of The Better Thing Blog. What an amazing year it’s been. My wife and I were talking the other night and both feel that it has been the sweetest year of our lives. God has been so near and shown us His astonishing love in so many ways.

We want to thank each of you for being a part of what God’s been up to throughout the year. Thank you for reading these posts. Thank you for your kindness and encouragement. Thank you for your support. And thank you for your critique. He has used you to draw us a little closer to Him each day.

The scriptural inspiration for the birth of this blog is the story in Luke ten where Martha is complaining to Jesus that Mary is not doing enough and while Mary is sitting at His feet, Jesus answers Martha, Don’t worry so much, Mary has chosen the better thing. The thing Mary chose was intimacy with The Living God and I hope in some small way you have been heartened to do the same by what’s been shared here.

Happy Thanksgiving Day, I am so thankful that you’ve given the time to read my postings over the past few months. Your encouragement and kind words have meant more than you can know. I’m eager to see what God has in the days and weeks ahead for you. If I can help in any way please allow me. Much love, Jim
