Most of us can agree that if we do good, kind, loving things in order to please men, we’re missing something. But is it much different if we do those same things for the purpose of being personally rewarded in Heaven?

Christianity was never intended to be a morality based on reward. Following Jesus is a process of becoming more and more like Him. Scripture tells us we are to be conformed to the image of His Son which means going through similar trials and tribulations. Jesus didn’t suffer to save us from suffering; He died to save us from death.

God is not hovering overhead waiting for us to jump through visible or invisible hoops so He can reward us for doing a good job. When we approach Him from this point of view the things we do will be done without power and for the wrong reason.
