Lord let the reality of your perfect love for me direct this day. Help me put my insecurities aside by resting in the fact that in You I have all that I need. Help me not look to others for the things I can only get from You and allow me to love out of the wealth of our relationship. The implications of Your love are astonishing, please help me catch a glimpse of them.

More from and on Bob Goff’s “Love Does”:

“I used to think I had to act a certain way to follow God, but now I know God doesn’t want us to be typical.”

The more we force ourselves to fit the mold, the more we deny the incredible uniqueness of God Himself. He made us in His image, unique and one of a kind, in order that His love for each of us would be like no other. It’s the only love that truly is enough.

2 Corinthians 3:17, 18

God is a living, personal presence, not a piece of chiseled stone. And when God is personally present, a living Spirit, that old, constricting legislation is recognized as obsolete. We’re free of it! All of us! Nothing between us and God, our faces shining with the brightness of his face. And so we are transfigured much like the Messiah, our lives gradually becoming brighter and more beautiful as God enters our lives and we become like him.

This one touches on the same topic as yesterday, comparison. Maybe at times we use comparison as an excuse to keep our distance from God but as we said before this isn’t coming from Him. He wants us to be different. He wants us to celebrate our uniqueness. Unfortunately we fall into the trap of comparing ourselves to others as a means of finding our worth. We look for the flaws in those around us in order to make ourselves feel better about our own. The good news is that’s not how God looks at us at all. He sees all of the good in us and isn’t afraid of the things that aren’t there yet. He thinks the very best of us at all times without comparison. So instead of saying Yes, you’re better. He saying, ” You’re so special, just the way I made you, you’re completely one of a kind and I couldn’t love you more. Find your worth in Me and stop looking for it elsewhere.”

The love that God has for us and thus the love we’re called to share with others is completely unique, one of a kind. Think about yourself for minute. If God loves you because He made you, does that fulfill your greatest need? What if His love is only because you received His Son or are part of some group? If that were the case for me I wouldn’t feel loved at all. I’d feel herded, insignificant, essentially unloved. Understanding this makes life the incredible adventure God intended. Imagine the significant opportunity of every encounter we have with each other. Consider the things to be shared and learned. Think of the joy or pain that doesn’t have to be experienced alone. That’s God’s love and we’re the ones that know it and get to share it.

If God loves me because He created me, it’s not enough. If God loves me because I believe in Him, it’s not enough. If God loves me because I do things for Him, it’s not enough. If God loves me because I am uniquely who I am and His love for me is unlike the love He has ever had for anyone before that is more than enough, in fact it is all that I need.

We are created to partake in an intimate, one of a kind relationship with our creator. Being with Him is the entire purpose of our lives. Why do we spend so much time apart from Him or doing things for Him at the expense of being with Him? Why do so many of us put this off until we get to Heaven when we could be with Him right now?

Uniqueness

One of the many things I love about God is His uniqueness. The depth of which is far more than the fact that He is The One and Only. Everything that He does is unique. I would go so far as to say that He doesn’t do things twice. Think of the world around us, there aren’t two identical anything: zebras, raindrops, and snowflakes not even two identical grains of sand. There are certainly no two people alike not only on the earth today but in all of time.

I think the primary reason God wants each of us to be different is so that we can enjoy an intimate, one of a kind relationship with Him, a relationship unlike any other.

One thing that we do have in common is a natural desire to be perfectly loved and accepted by just one person in a unique and special way. God put that desire in us so that we would seek Him, because He is the only one capable of that kind of love.

We love Him…

Because He first loved us. I think the first thing God ever did was love us. Not love us as a people but truly love each of us in a special one of a kind way and that all of creation was the result of His perfect love.
