How often is the irritation we feel towards others a result of us having unspoken expectations? Scripture says to freely give just as we freely receive. Both of those are tough. Is it okay to get agitated when we don’t get what we think we deserve? Or even more so is it all right for us to give but then be disturbed when the gift wasn’t appreciated to the degree we believe is appropriate? The closer our relationship with God the more we come to understand that everything belongs to Him and when we no longer assume ownership we can let go of expectations and freely give what we have so wonderfully received.

You can’t live someone else’s relationship with God.

We are so often encouraged to imitate another’s process of spirituality, “do these things to become who God wants you to be”. Bookshelves are full of people’s ideas of how it’s done. There’s nothing wrong with sharing how God has worked in your life, we just can’t expect it to work that way for others. God’s love for you is only enough if it is unique and one of a kind, formulas diminish this and make our relationship ordinary. Another way of saying unique is inimitable. Let’s not get hung up on trying to copy God’s relationship with someone else, instead let’s fervently pursue what He has for us. After all, imitation means an inferior substitute.

Do you remember the best day you and God ever had together? Today could top that if you choose. Or if you can’t think when that was, this could be the day. Right now invite Him to go with you through every moment, ask Him to remind you when you start to drift away and look for His input into every situation you find yourself in. Today can be remarkable if you let it.
