There’s a scene in the movie City Slickers where the grizzled cowboy Curly tells Mitch, the soft city guy in the middle of a mid-life crisis that “The secret of life is… just one thing”. Jesus says pretty much the same thing in Luke’s Gospel, “Only one thing is needed…” He’s answering Martha as she complains that Mary is not serving. The “one thing” Mary’s discovered is that there is nothing better than being in the presence of the Lord. The same is true for us today. We have the same choice Mary did. Are we going to sit at His feet and listen or busy ourselves with the lesser things?

We can’t multitask and serve God at the same time. Everywhere I turn I see people doing a lot of things at one time. What they don’t realize is that they never finish what they started before they move to the next. They do not understand how to honor their words. Words are meaningless to them. We can even put our words in a binding contract but if we have enough money or a good lawyer we will not honor our very own words. We divorce, bankruptcy, we never show up when we say we will, etc. The truth is we can’t do it on our own. Even I fail to commit to my own words. There is no model for this truth in this world so would you honor someone who would never lie,who never breaks a vow, who will never leave us nor forsake us. Everything this world has to offer is conditional or it is based on our performance. The gifts of God are irrevocable, they can not be taken away even when we blow it. It is a joint ownership, when I blow it Jesus will not. That is awesome. Thank you Jesus!
